Comic-Con was a blast, bringing all-new trailers and announcements for your favourite pop culture franchises. This year's event lasted four days — with a live, in-person audience and hundreds of panels scattered throughout the venue in San Diego, California. A small screen adaptation exploring the lore from J. Tolkien's books has been in the works at Amazon Prime for five years now. Fans could also expect to see the origin of Sauron — one of the greatest fantasy villains ever penned by Tolkien.

Some heroes choose the path of righteousness on their own. Others have the path to herodom determined for them by birth or destiny. And there are others who choose to become heroes despite - or even because of - the tragic and often life-altering circumstances that befall them. These heroes have been through hell, sometimes literally, and still choose to fight the good fight. The origins of these heroes are rarely similar. They can be as far-flung as being the sole survivor of a doomed planet billions of light years away, or as common as being the sole survivor of metropolitan street violence.

San Diego Comic-Con came back this past week with its first in-person convention since the pandemic began. And it wasn't just Spider-Man and Batman who wore masks - and you know everybody was in costumes because that's what everyone does there. Along with proof of vaccination, masks were mandatory for all the superheroes and everybody else, as coronavirus cases rise across the country. Stephen Thompson is at the event that ends today in San Diego. I just want to get that out the way.
