Making sure your furry best friend stays hydrated is an important aspect of pet parenthood. But how much water should your dog drink on a daily basis? But if your dog empties his bowl numerous times each day, or his water intake suddenly doubles, you may need to keep a closer eye on things. According to the Halifax Humane Society , a pound dog should drink approximately 33—65 ounces a day, but if your pooch eats a moisture-rich diet, he may not want to drink as much water directly from his bowl. Similarly, if your pooch has stepped up his activity level recently, his water intake will most likely increase to match his new fitness level.

Back to Fact Sheets. Download PDF. Water balance is tightly controlled by the body through regulation of water intake and water loss in urine. ADH tells the kidneys to conserve water and make concentrated urine. In these circumstances, the thirst centre in the brain is also stimulated and this stimulates drinking.
If this is the case, contact your vet. It can be helpful to take a urine sample along with you to the appointment and tell you vet exactly how much your dog is drinking in a 24 hour period. For help with both these tasks watch our videos below.
