Over the last four years, Stantec Consulting Ltd. The current bridge provides the only land access to Manitoulin Island. It carries both vehicles and pedestrian traffic across a narrow channel separating Manitoulin Island from Goat Island. The bridge swings open for boat traffic for the first 15 minutes of each daylight hour during the summer. On Tuesday, the province announced the results of online surveys that found the preferred replacement would be a two-lane swing bridge located west of the existing structure.

Suspension Bridge Rehabilitation Project
In a suspension bridge, the traffic-carrying deck is supported by a series of wire ropes that hang from massive cables draped between tall towers. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan, which was completed in , contains the world's longest suspension span distance between support towers —6, ft 1, m ; the entire bridge, including the portions between the towers and the shores, totals nearly 2. A century earlier, construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, with a span of 1, ft m took 14 years and resulted in the loss of 27 lives. Suspension bridges are one of the earliest types devised by man. The most primitive version is a vine rope linking two sides of a chasm; a person travels across by hanging from the rope and pulling himself along, hand over hand.

A swing bridge or swing span bridge is a movable bridge that has as its primary structural support a vertical locating pin and support ring, usually at or near to its center of gravity, about which the swing span turning span can then pivot horizontally as shown in the animated illustration to the right. Small swing bridges as found over canals may be pivoted only at one end, opening as would a gate, but require substantial underground structure to support the pivot. In its closed position, a swing bridge carrying a road or railway over a river or canal , for example, allows traffic to cross. When a water vessel needs to pass the bridge, road traffic is stopped usually by traffic signals and barriers , and then motors rotate the bridge horizontally about its pivot point. The typical swing bridge will rotate approximately 90 degrees, or one-quarter turn; however, a bridge which intersects the navigation channel at an oblique angle may be built to rotate only 45 degrees, or one-eighth turn, in order to clear the channel.
